Toronto City Centre Airport gets federal funds for new building

Toronto City Centre Airport will receive federal funding for the construction of an aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment shelter.

The airport will get $893,750 to cover the cost of the shelter, which includes the addition of an extra bay, with an exhaust system, to the existing maintenance garage and firefighting facility.

Construction will begin immediately, and the shelter is expected to be complete by the end of March 2010.

Passenger traffic at the Toronto City Centre Airport increased from 28,519 in 2005 to 508,574 in 2008, and the Toronto Port Authority, which operates and maintains the airport, expects that number to increase in 2009.

The funding comes from the 2009-2010 Airports Capital Assistance Program, ACAP, which funds capital projects related to safety, asset protection and operating cost reduction.

Eligible airports must have year-round regularly scheduled passenger service, they must meet Transport Canada airport certification requirements and they cannot be owned or operated by the federal government.
