Consulting Engineers of Ontario names new president
Consulting Engineers of Ontario has recruited professional engineer Barry Steinberg, currently director of marketing at the Ontario Real Estate Association, as its new president.
Steinberg, who has both an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and a master of applied science degree in mechanical engineering, assumes his new position Jan. 4.
“This just seemed to me to be a tremendous opportunity to help the consulting engineering community make the government and the public in general more aware of the industry’s contributions to society,” he said in an interview.
Steinberg was one of four candidates interviewed by the association’s executive committee from a shortlist of 10. He replaces John Gamble who left to become president of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada.
“We believe that Barry’s education and background make him the ideal candidate to lead CEO,” the association said. “We look forward to working with him and continuing CEO’s role as the voice for consulting engineering firms across Ontario.”
Steinberg, who received both his degrees from the University of Toronto, began his career with Energy Resource Technologies Inc. where he provided technical expertise in energy management and remote power system design.
He then worked at Lumacell Inc. for more than 10 years, first as its director of sales and marketing and then as its executive vice president and CEO. Lumacell manufactures emergency lighting unit equipment, exit signs and accessories for use in commercial, institutional and industrial environments.
Following his work in private industry, Steinberg in 2002 started with Royal LePage Commercial Inc. in the sale of businesses and industrial commercial properties.
In 2005, he joined the OREA as its director of marketing, where he was instrumental in developing OREA’s in-house research capabilities, strengthening OREA’s brand recognition among members and increasing growth in OREA’s online continuing education program.
