Peel Region hospital rebuild plan waiting for green light

BRAMPTON, Ont.

Subject to approval by the province’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the William Osler Health System will transform its Peel Memorial site in Brampton into a Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.

The 1.3 million-square-foot project is to be developed in two phases. The estimated $413 million first phase calls for demolition of existing buildings on the site and construction of new ambulatory care, urgent care, day surgery, primary care facilities, diagnostic facilities and clinics as well as 128 inpatient beds for rehabilitation and complex continuing care. Phase two involves construction of additional buildings to accommodate growth in services and partnership opportunities.

Osler hopes to receive government approval for its business case to redevelop the site early next year, a hospital spokesman said. The functional planning stage would then follow.

The redevelopment planning group includes the Zeidler Partnership Architects.

The proposed plans call for demolition tenders to be issued in 2010 and construction to get under way the following year. Phase one is to be completed in 2015 and phase two in 2024. Ninety per cent of construction costs are to be funded by the provincial government.
