Forget wind power, plant some trees in Haiti

Re: Wind power could play key role in Haiti reconstruction (DCN.com, Jan 25)

If the minister is suggesting using Haiti to prove that wind power works, then he should say so. In (Haiti's) 200+ years of existence, one could hardly refer to their use of fossil fuel as “dependence”.

They have no factories to speak of, primary mode of transportation is public transit – not two cars per person.

I could go on, but instead I suggest the minister go there and plant some trees – mahogany – to replace the ones they’ve been using for fuel.
