Water research centre planned for Delta, British Columbia

VANCOUVER

Metro Vancouver is planning to build a research centre at the site of the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Delta to improve treatment operations at the plant.

The $9 million centre will provide laboratory facilities for research, training and equipment demonstrations, and allow treatment processes to be piloted on-site.

“Now that funding is secured for the Annacis Academy, Metro Vancouver plans to put the project out to tender this spring and start construction this summer,” said Metro Vancouver spokesperson Glenn Bonn.

Construction should wrap up by March, 2011.

The federal and provincial governments are each contributing $3 million, with remaining funds provided by Metro Vancouver and the University of British Columbia.

The new building will be designed to meet or exceed a number of provincial government standards, and will include energy and water-saving systems, low-emission products, natural lighting, and advanced recycling and waste collection.
