Halifax police reviewing union’s donation to Nova Scotia NDP

HALIFAX

Nova Scotia’s chief electoral officer Christine McCulloch has asked police to determine if an investigation of the Nova Scotia Building and Construction Trades Council is necessary after the organization made an illegal donation to the NDP during last spring’s election campaign.

Const. Brian Palmeter says the force received a package of documents from Elections Nova Scotia last week.

He says investigators will need to ask a number of questions about the information before deciding “where to go next.”

The NDP has been fined $10,000 for accepting the donation from nine separate unions who each contributed $5,000 and then were reimbursed by the trades council.

At the time, the province’s electoral financing laws prohibited registered parties from accepting donations in excess of $5,000 from a single contributor.
