Niacon wins Niagara Construction Association’s project of the year award

Niacon Ltd. Construction Co. has won the Niagara Construction Association’s (NCA) project of the year award for the new 54-storey Hilton tower in Niagara Falls, the tallest such hotel structure in Canada.

Constructed over a 28-month period and at a cost of more than $100 million, the tower includes 467 guest suites and three restaurants. The project was completed in the spring of 2009, well in advance of the original schedule.

The construction association said the project was a major success “due to the teamwork, innovative thinking and pure perseverance” displayed by Niacon’s construction team.

“The new Hilton tower stands as a tribute to the managerial (personnel) and tradesmen of the local construction industry and ultimately, the NCA membership.”

Niacon president Chris Hawkswell said the award was particularly gratifying, given that most $100-million-plus projects in the Niagara region are undertaken by large Toronto general contractors.

Both Niacon and the owners of the Hilton Niagara were committed to maximizing regional content, he said and the majority of work went to local trade contractors.

Runner-up was Brouwer Construction Ltd. for the Niagara College wine visitor and education centre in Niagara on the Lake. The 8,500-square-foot facility was completed last fall at an estimated cost of $3.4 million. The awards were presented at a recent gala in St. Catharines
