Canadian Construction Association taking wait and see approach to Red Tape Commission

Ottawa is looking to slash through bureaucracy by establishing a Red Tape Commission. The government wants the commission to review federal regulations to help reduce compliance burdens and unnecessary regulations.

A wait-and-see approach is necessary when it comes to the commission because its mandate and scope is not clear in the federal budget, says the Canadian Construction Association.

“There areas of interest for review like environmental assessment and review but to what extent this commission will look at that remains to be seen,” said Michael Atkinson, president of CCA.

“Also, looking at the Canadian Revenue Agency there is red tape as well. Our industry has been targeted with certain measures to deal with the underground economy which has added a tremendous administrative burden to our employers with questionable results.”
