Prince Edward Island tightens rules for wind energy projects

CHARLOTTETOWN

The Prince Edward Island government has moved to tighten requirements for wind energy projects. Energy Minister Richard Brown announced the addition of three new requirements to the province’s environmental impact assessment guidelines.

Brown says any proposed wind turbine project must now include an approved power transmission corridor in order to win environmental approval.

Environmental impact reviews will also now be required for the construction of transmission lines with a voltage of 69 kilovolts or more, while public notification requirements for eligible projects have been amended so they must be advertised publicly for six consecutive days.

Brown says the changes are aimed at ensuring that the “full impact” of wind power projects and power transmission are taken into account when they are proposed.
