Concern over presence of hermit beetles delays Poland road job

WARSAW

Concern for a rare beetle is holding up construction on a local road in northern Poland. Ecologists say that the protected hermit beetle is living in some 60 trees growing along a 20-kilometre stretch of road.

But road work supervisor Jacek Jankowiak said that work planned for March has not started yet pending a decision from environment authorities whether the trees can be cut and transported to other locations where the beetles could find new habitat.

“The dark brown, glossy hermit beetle can be found throughout Europe in tree hollows that contain large amounts of dead wood. It mostly lives on oak and lime trees. Males release a pheromone with a smell similar to leather.
