The CAE/Michener Centre for the Advancement of Simulation and Education occupies two floors of the Michener Institute
Innovative medical teaching facility opens in Toronto
TORONTO
An innovative medical teaching facility, known as the CAE/Michener Centre for the Advancement of Simulation and Education, has opened in the heart of Toronto’s downtown hospital district.
The 20,000-square-foot centre occupies two floors of The Michener Institute.
One floor is dedicated to simulation techniques with flexible studio space to create a broad range of mock clinical environments. Students will find themselves in life-like settings that can recreate everything from the scene of a road accident to a SARS outbreak. Observation and de-briefing rooms support the studios.
Another entire floor provides objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) facilities to accommodate skills assessment for up to 37 candidates at a time.
The facility will be one of Canada’s largest simulation education centres for healthcare practitioners. When fully operational, the centre is expected to educate more than 1,500 students and healthcare practitioners per year.
The project is the first phase of a campus transformation designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects. The work was carried out by the special projects division of PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
“This facility remedies a fragmented atmosphere for learning in this 15-storey building,” says Donald Schmitt, a principal in Diamond + Schmitt. “We have created flexible, multi-purpose rooms that enhance an interactive and collaborative learning environment.”
In addition to reconfiguring and adding to existing floor space, the architects addressed mechanical, health and safety, electrical and environmental upgrades to a few other floors of the Michener building.
The project is on track for LEED certification.
“This state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance the student experience by using interprofessional education and integrated simulated learning to better prepare our future healthcare providers to respond to patient care needs,” said Dr. Paul Gamble, president and CEO of The Michener Institute.
