Delayed opening for Commonwealth Games stadium in India

NEW DELHI

The main stadium for the Commonwealth Games in India in October was finally opened July 27 following several delays to complete its remodelling.

Indian Sports Minister M.S. Gill and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikhsit performed the inauguration ceremony at the 60,0000-capacity Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

“I want to say to everyone that we are ready for the games,’’ Gill said. “It’s the first time in India that such a complex has been built.’’

The organizers missed numerous deadlines to complete the stadium, mainly due to the construction of a 150-metre tunnel that connects both ends of the stadium and which will be used by artists performing at the opening and closing ceremonies.
