VIDEO: How effective has stimulus spending been?
If you want a good indication of how effective government stimulus spending has been in Canada, look at the “remarkable” institutional starts statistics for the first half of 2010, CanaData chief economist Alex Carrick says.
“Through the first half of this year, in terms of square footage, the institutional category of construction is higher than the same period last year by 160 per cent,” he says. “In dollar terms it’s double what it was last year.”
Institutional starts from January through June of 2010 came in at about 24 million square feet; for the past decade institutional starts have fluctuated around 25 million square feet for the entire year.
“These are remarkable numbers,” Carrick says. “We’re saying for the year as a whole we expect institutional to be about 40 million square feet.”
The last time Canada saw an institutional starts figure that high, he notes, was in 1975.
Looking forward, Carrick says he doesn’t expect institutional starts to remain as strong, given the federal government’s March 2011 deadline by which all projects receiving stimulus funds must be completed.
“That means large projects won’t likely be initiated now that would hope to draw on government money, because they can’t possibly be finished by then.”
