Alberta oil sands construction projects face environmental assessment

The federal government is about to start environmental assessments on two proposed oil sands construction projects north of Fort McMurray, Alta. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency announced Monday it will provide $150,000 for the review of Shell's Jackpine Mine Expansion Project and $150,000 for the review of Shell's Pierre River Mine Project. The money is available to groups and individuals who successfully apply for funding before April 15 to participate in the environmental assessments.

The Pierre River Mine Project is a proposed oil sands surface mine and bitumen extraction facility. If approved, it would be located about 90 km north of Fort McMurray on the west side of the Athabasca River. The proposed development includes an open-pit mine, ore handling facility, bitumen extraction facilities, tailings processing facilities, support infrastructure, water and tailings management plans, as well as the construction of a bridge across the Athabasca River.

The other project would expand the existing Jackpine Mine about 70 km north of Fort McMurray on the east side of the Athabasca River. It would include additional mining and processing areas.
