Feds commit stimulus funds to $45-million Jewish community campus

The federal government announced Monday it may contribute up to $15 million in infrastructure stimulus spending towards a large institutional development north of Toronto.

The Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, includes educational, recreational, cultural, health and social services. The government plans to help fund Phase 3 of the campus, which will include a conference pavilion and atrium, theatre, lecture hall and outdoor pool. The third phase is scheduled to open in 2016 on a 50-acre site at Bathurst St. north of Rutherford Rd. in Richmond Hill, Ont.

Funding is contingent upon the signing of a contribution agreement with UJA (United Jewish Appeal) Federation of Greater Toronto.

The federation would be responsible for the funding not provided by the government. The total cost is estimated at $45 million. If the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto meets the criteria for stimulus funding, the federal money would be provided under the Major Infrastructure Component of the Building Canada Fund.
