Proposed First Coal mine in British Columbia undergoes federal environmental assessment

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) is inviting public comment on a proposed coal mine near Chetwynd, British Columbia.

First Coal Corp. of Vancouver is proposing to construct and operate the Central South Mine project, northeast of Prince George, which is expected to produce 1.5 million tonnes of metallurgical coal per year over 12 to 13 years.

First Coal plans to deliver the coal by rail to the port of Prince Rupert for export. The company has stated it would operate the mine using the ADDCAR Any Dip Highwall Mining System, which is remotely operated and designed to extract coal from seams one to three metres wide. ADDCAR is designed to cut a four-metre high portal about 300 metres into narrow, steeply dipping seams.

CEAA announced Monday it is a making available $50,000 to help groups and individuals wanting to take part in the federal environmental assessment of the Central South Mine. The agency said it will consider public comments and funding applications received by May 11.
