Region of Waterloo, Ontario approves light rapid transit

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario council voted in favour of a light rail transit route, with construction on the first stage planned to begin in 2014.

The regional council voted in favour of light rail transit as the “preferred technology” from Conestoga Mall in Waterloo to the Ainslie Street Terminal in Cambridge.

The region includes the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.

The first stage of the system would be light rail from Conestoga Mall in Waterloo to Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener.

A report on a preferred procurement strategy is expected in December.

The second stage would have light rail from Fairview Park Mall to the Ainslie Street Terminal. During the first stage, an adapted bus rapid transit service would operate from Fairview Park Mall to the Ainslie Street Terminal.

The first stage of light rail is anticipated to be ready in 2017.
