Tunnel boring starts on Toronto subway extension

The Toronto Transit Commission has started boring tunnels for an extension of Yonge-University-Spadina subway from the Downsview station into the city of Vaughan.

There are four tunnel boring machines and the total cost of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension is estimated at $2.6 billion.

The entire project includes a variety of contracts, including tunneling, watermain, road works, utility relocation and construction of six stations. It is scheduled to open in 2015.

The funding breakdown is:

• $697 from the federal government;

• $870 million from the Province of Ontario;

• $526 million from the City of Toronto, in which the entire subway system is now;

• and $352 million from the Regional Municipality of York, into which the subway will extend once it’s complete.
