Ottawa to fund participants in environmental assessment of Ontario radioactive waste disposal repository

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) announced Wednesday it will fund the participation of seven groups in an environmental assessment of a proposed deep geologic repository for radioactive waste from nuclear power plants operated by Ontario Power Generation.

Ontario Power Generation plans to build and operate the facility near the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station located on the shore of Lake Huron near Kincardine.

If approved, the repository would hold waste currently stored an interim waste management facility at the Bruce power plant, in addition to waste produced from the operations of nuclear generating stations at Bruce, Pickering and Darlington, Ontario.

CEAA approved a total of $175,000 to the Sierra Club Canada, Northwatch Coalition for Environmental Protection, Power Workers' Union, Canadian Environmental Law Association, Huron-Grey-Bruce Citizens Committee on Nuclear Waste, Great Lakes United and the International Institute of Concern for Public Health, for their participation in the public review of the project.
