Ottawa to fund construction at Quebec airports
The federal government announced Monday it plans to invest $15 million in construction and equipment procurement projects at six airports in Quebec.
The work includes refurbishment of buildings and lights at the airports at Schefferville, Sept-Iles, Havre-Saint-Pierre, Natashquan, Chevery and Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon.
Transport Canada will spend about $7 million at the Sept-Iles airport, located on the north shore in eastern Quebec, where the St. Lawrence River becomes the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In addition to vehicles, the Sept-Iles work will include replacement of the lighting and electrical distribution system, the terminal building roof and the gas detection system.
The airport will be connected to the municipal water system and the public areas of the terminal will be refurbished.
At the Havre-Saint-Pierre airport, about 200 kilometres east of Sept-Iles (on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence across from Anticosti Island), the air terminal will be redeveloped and repairs will be made to the facilities, including the runway surface. The total cost, including the purchase of a new snowplow, is estimated at $2 million.
The government will invest a combined total of $5.5 million towards the Natashquan, Chevery, Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon and Schefferville airports. Construction work will include installation of surveillance equipment at Natashquan and Chevery and repair of exterior siding at the Natashquan terminal building.
