Toronto building industry executive Stephen Dupuis dies after receiving award

Stephen Dupuis, president of the Building Industry and Land Development Association, died early Friday shortly after receiving an award from the Ontario Home Builders’ Association.

He had just been presented with the David Horton Lifetime Leadership Award of Excellence Thursday night.

He had lived in Aurora with his wife and two children. Published reports indicated he was 52.

The cause of death was not released. Published reports indicated he died on his way home from the ceremony.

According to the BILD website, his awards from the Canadian Home Builders’ Association included the Executive Officer’s Council Award of Honour for Leadership and the Dave Stupart Award of Honour.

He was the Executive Vice-President of the Greater Toronto Home Builders’ Association from 1994 until the merger with the Urban Development Institute in 2006 to create what is known today as BILD.

Earlier in his career he worked for the Municipalities of Ontario (from 1985 until 1988) and the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (from 1982 until 1985). He went to the the University of Waterloo, where he got a Bachelors’ degree in political science.
