Sprott Power receives turbine blades for Amherst, Nova Scotia wind farm
A major milestone was reached Tuesday in the construction of a Sprott Power Corp. wind farm in Amherst, Nova Scotia with the shipment of components.
The Nova Scotia government announced the first of 15 wind turbines left Halifax Tuesday for the $61 million power generation facility in Amherst. Last week, 36 of the blades, manufactured by Suzlon Wind Energy Corp., arrived in Halifax.
The Amherst wind farm will have a generating capacity of 31.5 Megawatts. The targeted commercial operations date is December, 2011, according to the Spott website, but a press release from the province Tuesday quotes a senior official as targeting next year.
The Nova Scotia Renewable Electricity Plan states that by 2015, 25 per cent of the province's electricity must come from clean, renewable sources of energy. By 2020, the province wants 40 per cent of electricity to be produced by renewable sources.
“ The arrival of the Suzlon turbine equipment marks another key milestone towards completion of the Amherst Project,” Jeff Jenner, chief executive officer of Sprott Power, stated in a provincial press release. “ We look forward to receiving the equipment at the site, and expect that the project will continue making great progress towards its completion early next year.”
