Carrick: World economy spinning its wheels

While we may not be in a recession, as defined by two consecutive quarters of GDP decline, the world economy has been in shock for much of the year. In July, the Canadian gross domestic product rose 0.3 per cent, while personal income in the U.S. dropped 0.1 per cent in August.

Meanwhile, the latest figures on U.S. jobless claims has been somewhat encouraging and the estimated rate of growth south of the border has been revised upwards to 1.3 per cent for the second quarter.

For more information please see An economy spinning its wheels, looking for firmer traction by Alex Carrick, chief economist, Reed Construction Data Canada. In his latest blog post, Carrick analyzes the latest gross domestic product and employment figures in the context of the European sovereign debt problems, oil and metal prices.
