Federal Bridge awards contract to Aecon Construction in Cornwall, Ontario

Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd. (FBCL) announced it has awarded Aecon Construction and Material Ltd. (TSX:ARE) a contract for the second phase of a bridge in Cornwall, Ontario.

The contract will be to design and build a new low-level span of the North Channel Bridge in Cornwall and its approaches to the St. Lawrence River.

FBCL stated that Aecon will mobilize this fall and the construction of the new bridge and its approaches is scheduled for completion in 2013.

The value of the contract was not released. According to Reed Construction Data Canada’s Building Reports, the value of the project was $32 million.

The contract is part of a four-phase project, scheduled for completion in 2016, to replace an older structure connecting Cornwall and Cornwall Island.

The next two phases will involve the demolition of the existing bridge and realignment of Brookdale Avenue and Water Street.

Incorporated in 1998, FBCL is a crown corporation that replaced the former St. Lawrence Seaway Authority as the corporate body responsible for certain federal bridges. Other assets include the Jacques Cartier and Champlain bridges in Montreal.
