Federation of Canadian Municipalities funds Kitchener, Ontario wastewater plant upgrades
The Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario announced Friday that the Federation of Canadian Municipalities is providing a $200,000 grant from the Green Municipal Fund to upgrade the Kitchener Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The FCM will also provide $2 million in low-interest loans towards the project.
The Kitchener Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade will improve the process by which air is added to the water, and ammonia and organic nitrogen are processed into nitrate. Construction is being done in stages to reduce the impact to plant operations. Other upgrades involve the design and building of new facilities to process the biosolids created during the treatment process. The new facility will convert the biosolids into cake form rather than liquid form.
Waterloo Region is the upper tier of municipal government for the City of Kitchener. The region also includes the cities of Waterloo and Cambridge.
One goal of the wastewater plant upgrade is to reduce the amount of ammonia-nitrogen in the treatment plant effluent flowing into in the Grand River by about 75 per cent.
The federal government endowed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities with $550 million to establish the Green Municipal Fund, which is designed to improve standards of air, water and soil quality, and climate protection.
