Waterloo, Ontario unveils library, sports centre funded by gas tax

The City of Waterloo, Ontario has officially completed the John M. Harper Branch Library and Stork Family YMCA facility, a $22.3-million construction project funded in part by the federal Gas Tax Fund.

The 21,000-square-foot library includes self-checkout kiosks, wireless Internet and an automated sorter for returned library material. The YMCA includes a four-lane swimming pool designed to be accessible to people with disabilities, including a chairlift and ramp. It also has a walking and running ramp and weight-training area.

The city is aiming for silver certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Features include a green roof, motion-controlled lighting, low-flow plumbing and windows placed in such a way as to provide natural light to the heart of the building.

The federal government contributed $4.1 million through the Gas Tax Fund, while the city provided $9.5 million. The YMCA contributed $8.2 million and Waterloo Public Library contributed $530,000 through library donations.

Between 2010 and 2014, the City of Waterloo will receive over $11.9 million from the Gas Tax Fund.
