Niagara Region, Ontario starts environmental assessment for road improvements

The Regional Municipality of Niagara has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to identify possible improvements to intersections on Niagara Stone Road in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

Niagara Region is the upper tier of municipal government for Niagara-on-the-Lake and 11 other cities and towns, including Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland and Fort Erie.

The study will address intersection improvements along Niagara Stone Road, also known as Regional Road 55, between Airport Road and Line 2 Road. The area of study is northeast of Niagara District Airport and southwest of Virgil, an unincorporated community in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Possible improvements could include roundabouts, roadway realignments and traffic control upgrades. In addition to potential intersection improvements, the study will identify and address other engineering aspects of the study area including roadway geometrics, cross roads, drainage, culverts, current pavement condition, utilities and services.

The first of two public information meetings is scheduled the evening of November 8 at the Virgil Fire Station.
