Ottawa draft budget includes $18 million on sewer upgrades

The City of Ottawa today tabled a draft budget for 2012 that includes acceleration of capital works projects, including 200 kilometres of road construction, to take advantage of low interest rates. The plan includes $18.3 million to upgrade sewers and $24 million over three years on cycling infrastructure.

“This year the City will take advantage of record-low interest rates to advance $340 million in much needed capital works, improving our road and cycling network and strengthening our recreations and transportation networks,” City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick stated in a press release. “This plan charts a course of better service to citizens, smart financing of projects that will create over 2,500 additional jobs in the city.”

The draft budget will be discussed at Council Standing Committee meetings and four public consultations this fall. A special meeting of Council will be held on November 30 to consider the recommendations from Standing Committees of Council and relevant city boards. Council will debate and finalize Budget 2012 on November 30.

The spending plan proposes that the city proceed with the $12-million redevelopment of Arts Court and to spend $21.3 million to improve the stormwater-system in Kanata.

It also proposes that the city proceed with 150 infrastructure projects, including 200 kilometres of road construction, 70 kilometres of bicycle-lane and road-shoulder construction, 20 kilometres of sidewalk building and construction of a number of bridges.
