DPR Construction gets $121M Facebook data centre contract

DPR Construction announced Friday it has been awarded a US$121-million contract to build a 300,000-square-foot computer data centre in Lulea, Sweden for social media website Facebook.

The project will be a joint venture with NCC Construction Sweden and Portland, Oregon-based Fortis Construction.

Palo Alto, California-based Facebook plans to aim for gold certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard.

On its website, Facebook says it is “one of the most-trafficked sites in the world” with more than 800 million active users (defined as those who have returned to the site within 30 days) and it handles millions of queries per day. It says it has more than 900 million objects (including pages, groups and events) that people interact with, and more than 250 million photos are uploaded to it every day.
