London, Ontario uses Green Municipal Fund to map energy use

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and the city of London, Ontario announced Monday a $50,000 Green Municipal Fund contribution, which will be used for an energy mapping exercise, dubbed Rethink Energy London.

The Green Municipal Fund originated with a $550-million endowment from the federal government to FCM.

Rethink Energy London includes the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) and its partners in the Integrated Energy Mapping for Ontario Communities (IEMOC) project. The project is intended to provide neighbourhood-level data on building energy use and estimated personal transportation energy use.

The city says it will use the data to help local utilities “develop community energy strategies that can be tailored to the needs of individual neighbourhoods.”

The city also says it can predict future energy use and evaluate the relative impact of different energy strategies and technologies on greenhouse gas emissions, local energy expenditures, local energy production and job creation.
