Ontario transportation ministry touts 224 highway construction projects

TORONTO

By the end of this year’s construction season, 14 bridges will have been built, 99 will have been repaired and 1,281 kilometres of highway will have been built in Ontario, the provincial government announced Monday.

These 224 highway projects are on track to creating 17,000 jobs this year, the Ministry of Transportation stated in a press release. The province is calling this a record investment in transportation infrastructure and said these projects are strengthening the province’s economy.

Many GO Transit infrastructure projects have also been created this year, among them the creation 1,645 parking spaces at various GO stations. The projects have created nearly 100 jobs.

When possible, the province is using new construction practices and green technology, including: rapid bridge replacement, which can turn a year of work into one day; recycled pavement; and recycled and shredded tires for bridge embankment fill.
