Infrastructure investment seen as one path to job creation: Ontario Throne Speech
TORONTO
David C. Onley, Ontario's Lieutenant Governor, delivered the government's Speech from the Throne in the legislature today. The speech, which opened the first session of the Ontario legislature since the Oct. 6 election, focused on moving towards a strong economy that protects and creates jobs.
In the speech, Onley said the Ontario government will continue to make investments in infrastructure, which will create jobs.
“It is why, together, we are building new roads and public transit as well as a modern electricity system with new transmission lines and electricity generation,” he said, pointing to new transit in Toronto, Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo, a new subway to York University and Vaughan, and a rail link between Lester B. Pearson International Airport and Union Station.
The next step in that transit plan will be the introduction of two-way, all-day GO train service.
The ore chromite deposits in northwestern Ontario was one place the government pointed to as an opportunity for growth.
“Your government remains fully committed to turning the vast, untapped potential of the Ring of Fire into good, leading-edge northern jobs,” said Onley.
The government also pointed to green jobs through the Green Energy Act and strengthening trade ties in growing international markets like India and China.
Curbing government spending and finding savings is the Liberals’ plan to eliminating the $16 billion deficit by 2017-2018.
Further details will be released in tomorrow’s Fall Economic Statement.
