Stantec to provide engineering for Sydney, Nova Scotia tar ponds remediation

The Sydney Tar Ponds Agency announced this week that Stantec Consulting Ltd. will provide engineering design plans for projects that use the sites of tar ponds and coke ovens in Sydney, Nova Scotia, which are undergoing environmental remediation.

The provincial transportation and infrastructure department stated in a press release that the $1.48 million contract is for detailed design plans for a commons area with an outdoor concert venue plus trails with bridges and boardwalks. The original plan was done by Ekistics Planning and Design.

Soil and sediment in the area was contaminated after nearly 100 years of steel and coke production.

Sydney Tar Ponds Agency is responsible for project management, contract implementation, design documents, tendering and verification and quality control.
