CEI Architecture studies feasibility of Thunder Bay, Ontario event centre

The City of Thunder Bay, Ontario announced it is proceeding with the second phase of a feasibility study on a proposed sports and entertainment event centre, estimated at $80 million.

The city stated in a Dec. 2 press release that the centre is “no longer being considered” for P3 Canada funding but it is aiming to have the centre shovel-ready.

The city plans to contract the Phase 2 feasibility study to CEI Architecture , True Grit Consulting Ltd. of Thunder Bay and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. It will be funded in part by FedNor.

The consortium will be led by Conrad Boychuk, an architect with CEI, which has offices in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna, British Columbia.

No location has been chosen for the proposed centre but the intent is to succeed Fort William Gardens as the main sport and entertainment venue.

The feasibility study, due next March, will involve final site selection, facility design, parking and traffic analysis and an economic impact analysis.

A comprehensive site evaluation will be done for the international airport, waterfront district and Innova Business Park.
