VIDEO: Remembering the Bentall Four
On January 7, 1981, Gunther Couvreux, Brian Stevenson, Donald W. Davis and Yrjo Mitrunen fell thirty-six floors to their deaths when a fly form attached to the Bentall building in downtown Vancouver came loose.
Every year representatives of the construction industry, labour and the government pay tribute to those men in a ceremony held just across the street from the site of the accident. The ceremony, organized by the B.C. Federation of Labour, is a chance to both honour their memories and stress the importance of workplace safety in construction, an industry with many potential dangers and a need for constant vigilance.
Among the speakers at the ceremony were Tom Sigurdson, the executive director of the British Columbia and Yukon Building and Construction Trades Council, as well as Jim Sinclair, the president of the British Columbia Federation of Labour and the Honourable Margaret MacDiarmid, the British Columbia minister for Labour, Citizens Services and Open Government.

Ontario Technological Skills Competition in Waterloo a “pressure cooker”
1,900 students from across Ontario competed in 63 career fields at the 23rd annual Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC) in RIM Park and Manulife Sportsplex in Waterloo. Most gold medal winners will advance to the Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton May 13 to 16. Winners will form Team Canada to participate in the 2013 WorldSkills International Competition in Leipzig, Germany.
