Ottawa allocates $18K for participants in Osisko Hammond Reef gold mine environmental assessment

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) announced Monday it has allocated a total of $18,000 to support the participation of two groups in a review of Osisko Mining Corp.’s proposed Hammond Reef gold mine near Atikokan, Ontario.

The Hammond Reef Gold Project, about 23 kilometres northeast of Atikokan (about 200 kilometres west of Thunder Bay) proposes the construction, operation and closure of an open pit gold mine, processing facility and tailings management facility.

CEAA said funding will be provided to the Atikokan Sportsmen's Conservation Club and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters; and the Ontario Coalition of Aboriginal People. It is intended to support public participation in upcoming steps of the comprehensive study process, including a review of the comprehensive study report for the proposal.

Montreal-based Osisko Mining Corp. owns the Canadian Malartic gold property west of Val d’Or, Quebec. It acquired the Hammond Reef Gold Project in 2010 through the acquisition of Brett Resources Inc., which was renamed Osisko Hammond Reef Gold Ltd.
