Ottawa City Council approves affordable housing capital projects

The City of Ottawa announced Wednesday that Council endorsed a $42.9-million affordable rental housing program. Requests for proposals will be issued this year through 2014.

The city will provide $17 million and upper levels of government will provide $25.9 million on the Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario program, which will start with a $1.5-million, 11-unit wheelchair-accessible building.

“In 2012, another $15 million will be allocated to new properties including a project at 800 Montreal Road, where the federal government has provided land worth $1.7 million to the City for $1.00, on which 60 to 90 apartments would be built,” the city stated in a press release. The city says those projects will be selected on the basis of requests for proposals to be held in 2012, 2013 and 2014. They will be financed with government funds but owned and managed by organizations with expertise in affordable housing.
