Fisheries and Oceans Canada proposes harbour improvements in Fox Island River, Newfoundland

The Newfoundland and Labrador department of Environment and Conservation announced this week that a proposed harbour construction project on the west side of the island has been registered with the province by the federal department of fisheries and oceans.

If approved, the project would include repairs to and improvements of a small craft harbour facility in Fox Island River, about 100 kilometres southwest of Corner Brook. It would also include the reconstruction of two channel walls, construction of a rubblemound breakwater and dredging.

“The proposed channel wall reconstruction and breakwater construction is intended to provide shelter to existing wharf infrastructure and reduce the frequency of future maintenance dredging,” the Newfoundland environment ministry stated in an environmental assessment bulletin.

The deadline for public comments is March 7 and the minister’s decision is due by March 12.
