Montreal gas station designed by Mies van der Rohe converted to recreation centre
The Montreal borough of Verdun announced Friday it has officially opened La Station, a former Esso service station designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as a centre for youth aged 12-17 and adults 50 and over.
“The Verdun Borough has invested approximately $1,249,839, in addition to counting on a financial contribution of $326,805 from Ville de Montreal and $395,057 granted within the Entente sur le developpement culturel de Montreal,” the borough stated in a press release.
Located on L’Ile-des-Soeurs, about a kilometre south of the Champlain Bridge over the St. Lawrence River, the former gas station was designed by Mies van der Rohe between 1967 and 1968, and was recognized as an historical monument after it was shut down in 2008.
Conversion was carried out in keeping with the building’s heritage value.
The centre now offers activities and services to adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 as well as to adults age 50 and over, including multi-purpose spaces for discussion and games.
Other construction projects on Mies van der Rohe buildings include PCL Constructors’ revitalization of the Toronto Dominion centre on the south side of King Street west of Bay Street in the financial district of Toronto.
