Toronto hotel fined over worker using metal pliers in electrical panel
The Ontario Ministry of Labour announced Friday that an Ontario court fined the Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel and Conference Centre $70,000 over a May, 2010 incident in which a maintenance worker was injured.
In a press release, the ministry stated that on May 1, 2010, a maintenance worker attempted to use metal pliers to remove a fuse from an electrical panel. An explosion occurred and the worker suffered first, second and third-degree burns.
The company pleaded guilty for contravening the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Regulation 851 section 43, which states: “Tools and other equipment that are capable of conducting electricity and endangering the safety of any worker shall not be used in such proximity to any live electrical installation or equipment that they might make electrical contact with the live conductor.”
The hotel is on Dixon Road west of Highway 27 in Toronto, just east of Lester B. Pearson International Airport.
