The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency announced Monday that a joint federal-provincial assessment will be done on Alderon Iron Corp.'s (TSX.V: ADV) Kamistiatusset (Kami) Iron Ore open pit mining project in southwest Labrador.

CEAA will be inviting the public to comment until March 17 and is conducting the assessment in cooperation with the environmental assessment division of the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation.

Montreal-based Alderon is proposing the construction of an open pit iron ore mine about 10 kilometres west of Labrador City. The project would include waste rock disposal areas, a tailings management facility and a 12-kilometre rail connection to the existing Quebec north Shore Labrador Railway. It would also include storage and load-out facilities in the port of Sept-Iles, Quebec.
