Les Architectes FABG to design $16-million Montreal theatre

The Montreal borough of Verdun announced Monday that Les Architectes FABG will design the plans and specifications for a $16.3-million theatre, converting the former Arena Guy-Gagnon. The project also provides for redevelopment and expansion of the circus school, Ecole de cirque de Verdun.

It is located at 5190 Boulevard LaSalle, on the St. Lawrence River about two kilometers south of the Champlain Bridge.

“We were concerned about making a connection between the building and the river as well as the park in which the building is located,” Les Architectes FABG partner Eric Gauthier stated in a press release. “This project is meant to be a sign of distinctiveness, yet integration, boldness and exemplariness, from an environmental standpoint.”

Starting in the fall of 2013, the theatre will be able to offer between 368 and 444 fixed and retractable seats.

The total cost is $16.3 million, including $12.4 million for the cultural venue in Studio B, including demolition, construction, landscaping, parking and equipment. The redevelopment of Studio A will cost $3.9 million.

The borough of Verdun stated that Ecole de cirque de Verdun is awaiting the completion of financial arrangements to begin redeveloping Studio A.

The City of Montreal is offering to contribute $7.9 million.

The project will include a cultural venue in Studio B, which will include a mediation room and exhibition hall, plus living quarters for performers.
