Lanterra Developments to add nine storeys to Toronto Sutton Place Hotel

Lanterra Developments announced Wednesday it has acquired the Sutton Place Hotel, a block east of Queen’s Park in Toronto, and plans to work with Page & Steele to redevelop the building.

Lanterra stated in a press release it plans to expand the base of the existing tower to accommodate 20,000 square feet of retail space, and increase the height of the 300-foot tower by nine floors.

It also plans to redevelop the building, at 955 Bay Street at Wellesley Street, into condominiums. The hotel already has some furnished residential units and is often used as a conference venue. It is situated kitty-corner to an Ontario government office complex just east of the Ontario Legislature building at Queen’s Park, and southeast of a group of University of Toronto residences and affiliated colleges.

“The plan to maintain the main structure will allow the project to provide a more modest level of demands on the surrounding neighbourhood during construction while making dramatically lower use of aggregate and other building materials that would be reality in a new build approach,” Lanterra stated in a press release. “This creates an environmental benefit to the project that along with its significant design improvements for energy efficiency will allow Lanterra to apply for environmental certification of the building adding yet another significant attractive quality to the development when it is completed.”
