Funding announced for Sept-Iles, Quebec port facility construction

OTTAWA

Transport Canada has announced that the federal government will contribute “up to” $55 million towards the construction of new port facilities at Sept-Iles, Que., near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River.

The project includes a new deep-water dock equipped with two ship loaders and two conveyor lines. The total value of the project is $220 million and it is expected to be complete by March 31, 2014.

“This investment will help the port meet global shipping standards for the iron ore industry, which is the largest commodity shipped through the port to overseas markets,” Transport Canada stated in a press release. “It will also boost the effectiveness and capacity of port operations.”

The port, located about 650 kilometres northeast of Quebec City, is expected to handle more than 34 million tonnes of cargo in 2012.
