Hamilton-Halton Construction Association recognizes health and safety achievements
The Hamilton-Halton Construction Association (HHCA) has saluted the health and safety achievements of eight member firms in its annual awards program.
The awards were created in 1986 to recognize those firms “dedicated to and successful at” providing healthy and safe construction workplaces.
“Receiving an award involves much effort and hard work on behalf of an entire company,” said association general manager Sandy Alyman.
“Members make the financial and managerial investment to achieve results.
“They focus their employees on the goal of first-class health and safety performance.”
Participating firms’ safety programs are evaluated by the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association.
Alyman said scoring gets “more and more difficult” each year, given results achieved by participating contractors. Scores had to be rounded off to three decimal points to obtain the winner.
“Even then, the scores were so close that we had to determine ties in some categories.”
The 2011 recipients of the health and safety achievement awards are:
— Category I ( 500,000 + person-hours):
Comstock Canada. The company provides total electrical and mechanical services for a wide range of industrial, commercial, nuclear and institutional construction projects. Comstock employs 1,500 people and has an annual volume of $500 million.
— Category II (250,000 – 499,999 person-hours):
Lancaster Sheet Metal. With more than 50 years of construction management expertise, Lancaster provides a full range of sheet metal, architectural sheet metal & refrigeration services.
— Category III (100,000 - 249,000 person-hours):
Safway Services, a leader in providing scaffolding and access solutions; Barclay Construction Group, which has been providing general building service for heavy industry for more than 45 years; and McGowan Insulations Ltd., a private industrial and commercial contracting company that has been established in Ontario since 1972.
— Category IV (30,000 – 99,999 person-hours):
John Kenyon Ltd. While continuing to provide cleaning and painting services, the majority of the company’s revenues are now generated by the metal roof and wall cladding division that was added in 1981.
— Category V (6,000 – 29,999 person-hours):
B & G Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc., which specializes in flat roofing for the industrial, commercial and institutional sectors; and Brand/Aluma Systems, which has been serving the petrochemical industry, fossil and nuclear power industries as well as the mining sector for more than 35 years.
The awards were presented at the association’s 92nd annual general meeting and awards dinner Feb. 9.
The HHCA represents 390 companies engaged in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector s in the Hamilton and Halton areas.
