Toronto’s best projects recognized by TCA

The Toronto Construction Association (TCA) has recognized outstanding achievements by both individuals and companies in its 15th annual “Best of the Best” awards.

The awards are part of a concerted effort by the association to recognized outstanding builders in the community and the industry. They were handed out at the association’s 145th annual meeting in late January.

The 2012 project achievement awards were presented in three categories, small (under $5 million), medium (under $50 million) and large (over $50 million) projects.

The awards pay tribute to member companies that raise the bar in terms of professional excellence.

“This award acknowledges prime contractors and their project teams who have completed extraordinary projects and demonstrated outstanding leadership and business practices,” said retiring TCA chair Ian Steer.

Winning projects were all substantiallycompleted in 2012.

In the large projects category, winners were:

— George Brown College waterfront health sciences campus, Toronto. (EllisDon). Designed to achieve LEED Gold, the purpose-built campus is equipped with informal learning spaces, rooftop terrace, and state-of-the art labs overlooking the Toronto harbor. Below-grade parking was provided as well.

The 330,000-square-foot facility opened last September.

— Niagara Health System new health-care complex, St. Catharines. (PCL Constructors Canada Inc.) Completed on time and on budget, the new hospital will provide a variety of regional and other services under one roof. Designed to achieve LEED certification, the 970,000-square-foot complex has the capacity for up to 399 beds. Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care worked with the Niagara Health System to build the complex.

PCL CONSTRUCTORS CANADA INC.

The Niagara Health System’s new health-care complex in St. Catharines, the recipient of a 2012 project achievement award from the Toronto Construction Association, was delivered by Plenary Health Niagara. The team included PCL. The project was substantially completed in November.

In the medium-sized projects category, the award went to Alberici Constructors Ltd. for the Ferguson Avenue water booster pumping station upgrades project in Hamilton. Phase 1 of the $21.1 million contract included installation of a new caisson retaining wall and site services while Phase 2 involved installation of a new pumping station structure.

In the small project category, the award went to TCI Titan Contracting Inc. for a project that involved conversion of a 20,000-square-foot car dealership on Portage Road in Niagara Falls into a facility to house Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

The Windsor contracting company was awarded the contract by Greener Project Developments (2011) Inc.

Outside of the project sphere, the following 2012 awards were also presented:

— Trade contractor award: Symtech Innovations Ltd. The award recognizes a member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and superior business practices.

— Outstanding safety performance award: Brook Restoration. The award acknowledges outstanding leadership, performance or significant contributions to advancing construction safety.

— Innovation award: Westbury National Show Systems Ltd. for a high-resolution video wall. The award recognizes a unique adaptation or approach of a product process, technology or technique.

— Green building culture award: PCL Constructors Canada Inc. The award honours a company that best demonstrates a corporate green building culture in terms of conducting day-to-day business.

— The Construction Institute of Canada-chancellor’s award of excellence: Craig Lesurf of Walsh Construction, Lee Kelly-Chin of Kenaidan Contracting and Brad Chin of MMM Group.

The award recognizes individuals who have advanced construction education and have provided leadership in advancing the institute itself.

— Donald P. Giffin construction industry achievement award: This year’s award was presented posthumously to Paul Richer. The award honours exemplary dedication and leadership in pursuing the construction industry’s common goals and interests.

— TCA distinguished volunteer award: Sandra Burnell, Paul Bisanti and Roger Willoughby.

— Sean P. McKenna young construction executives’ award: Carlo Guido of MHPM Project Managers. The award honours outstanding leadership by a club member.
