MEDIA ADVISORY - PREMIER STELMACH MISLEADING U.S. DELEGATION WITH CLAIMS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE TAR SANDS

Environmental Defence, the Pembina Institute and Natural Resources Defense Council to Hold Telephone Press Conference

OTTAWA, Sept. 8 /CNW/ - Dr. Rick Smith, Executive Director of Environmental Defence, Dr. Marlo Raynolds, Executive Director of the Pembina Institute and Liz Barratt-Brown, Senior Attorney for Natural Resources Defense Council, will hold a telephone news conference today on expectations regarding this week's visit of U.S. Speaker of the House, the Honorable Nancy Pelosi, and the Honorable Edward Markey, Chairman of the Energy and Environment Committee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

Premier Stelmach has stated that his goal for the meeting with Speaker Pelosi is "to appeal to her sense of reason" and "talk about what has been accomplished with the oil sands and how we're going to overcome any of the environmental challenges that come with any natural resource extraction." The news conference will highlight the lack of environmental improvements in the tar sands especially in light of recent report linking oil sands operations with downstream contamination of the Athabasca watershed.
