SNC-Lavalin wins contract to manage construction of Mauritania iron ore mine

SNC-Lavalin has been contracted to provide engineering, procurement and construction management services for an iron ore concentrator project near Zouerate, Mauritania.

The contract was awarded by that country’s Société Nationale Industrielle et Miniére (SNIM)

The Guelb II Iron Ore Project is adjacent to SNIM's existing iron ore operations in the region, and is expected to contribute an additional four million tonnes of iron ore concentrate annually.

The total capital investment for the new facilities is estimated at US$630 million. SNIM, which is majority-owned by the government of Mauritania, produced close to 11 million tonnes of iron ore products in 2008.

"This project is a key element to SNIM's expansion strategy in the iron ore sector and will bring further opportunities to the local community,” SNC-Lavalin executive vice-president Feroz Ashraf said in a news release.

Engineering and procurement activities have begun on the project, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2010 with completion slated for 2013.

The contract is a reflection of SNC-Lavalin’s bid to expand its market share in the iron ore sector, the company said.
