Environmental assessment underway for Niagara, Ontario wastewater plant construction
The Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario announced a public information centre is scheduled February 8 for the possible construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The regional government, which started an environmental assessment in 2008 on “future wastewater servicing alternatives,” said the study now requires a harmonized federal and provincial EA. Its preferred solution is to construct a new facility to replace an existing wastewater plant at 1738 Lakeshore Road, near the shore of Lake Ontario about nine kilometers west of the Niagara River.
Niagara Region is the upper tier of municipal government for the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and 11 other municipalities, including St. Catharines and Niagara Falls. It predicts that increased wastewater servicing capacity for the Niagara Urban Service Area and community of Virgil will be required by 2016. The Niagara-on-the-Lake official plan requires an amendment to permit construction of a new facility.
The regional government said it will hold a public information centre from 6:00 until 8:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake community centre at 14 Anderson Lane.
